If you asked me what my favorite part about being a beauty editor is, I’d tell you it’s testing out some of the most amazing skincare products and perfecting my skincare routine. Because I’m a skincare junkie, not a makeup junkie.

However, I’ve recently started experimenting more and I’m desperate to change my ways. I want to go from someone who slaps on some concealer, mascara and blusher, then heads out the door to apply two shades of eyeshadow, followed by a pop of gloss and a statement red lip.

I’m all ears when it comes to makeup tips right now. And if you’re going to get makeup tips from anyone, who better than the woman who makes Rosie Huntington-Whiteley look like this…?

Nikki DeRoest, Bare Minerals Global Makeup Artist, is an absolute glow-genius. So when I found out I was to spend an evening with her in a makeup masterclass, I was sure to take notes.

Here are the tips and tricks I learned…

    Where to apply your highlighter

We all know that the best highlighter can transform a look, but knowing where to put it and how much to use can be difficult at times.

We’re often told to apply it to the high points of our face – the cheekbones and the bridge of our nose – and DeRoest agrees, but she also recommends applying it to the tip of your nose: ‘Selfies are often taken side-on, so highlight the sides of your nostrils.’

She also takes her highlighter south under your eyes: ‘I like to go far under the eye, because I really like to reflect the light under the eye. It’s really bright.’ A great tip if you have dark circles like me.

She likes to use liquid highlighter, for its natural look, and uses her fingers to press it into the skin to ensure it sinks in properly.

How to make fake fuller lips

Not all of us are blessed with lips like Rosie’s; I inherited my mother’s lips, nicknamed ‘Little Lippies’ by my father, so I’m worlds apart. But DeRoest says we shouldn’t worry, because there’s a simple trick to fake plump, luscious lips.

No matter what color lipstick you plan to wear, grab a nude lip liner that’s slightly darker than your skintone. Use it to trace your natural lip line, but ever so slightly overline it at the corners of your mouth. This will give the illusion that you’ve got a perfect pillow pout.

Follow it up with any color, even the best red lipstick, for a polished look.

Where you should really start filling in your brows

It seems pretty obvious, but DeRoest says the part of your forehead that needs filling the most is the area with the least amount of hair. So, whatever brow product you use – because there are so many great brow makeup products out there – ‘start by filling in the tails at the outer corners, then brush in the same direction using the spoolie.’

Once you’ve done that, look at your brows to judge if you need to add more to the bit closest to your nose. No one wants tadpole-esque eyebrows, what you’re aiming for are textured, brushed up brows.

So there we have it; Three really simple tips from the woman who repeatedly makes Rosie Huntington-Whiteley look brighter than the sun.
