How to use an eyelash curler

Gone are the days when an eyelash curler resembled a mean looking bear trap.

The latest thinner iterations are easy to use and won’t leave lashes curled or chopped.

In fact, eyelash curlers can now fulfill all your falsies dreams if you have straight hair or just want to wake up wide when your lids are carrying more stuff than your average celebrity.

Even Chanel recently released its own chic-as-hell version — a sign if ever we needed to use an eyelash curler.

The trouble is, most of us look at eyelash curlers and think, ‘What do I do with them?’ and ‘How do I not accidentally gouge out my eyeball?’.

There is a skill in using an eyelash curler

Marie Claire Chatted with make-up artist Zoe Taylor for Chanel about the dos and don’ts of eyelash curling…

1. Always use your eyelash curler before applying mascara, false eyelashes or any other makeup.

‘I always curl the lashes when I’m prepping the skin and then once again before applying mascara. I place the curler under the lash about ¼ from the root, then press down, release and move a little closer. I keep walking until I’m up against the root of the whip. This helps achieve a deep, long-lasting curl instead of just twisting in a blowout. It’s always worth remembering that it’s much harder to get a nice curl when your lashes are wet. Re-curling once the mascara is on can cause the lashes to clump and clump together.’

2. Hold the eyelash curler securely – that’s it!

‘There is no right or wrong way to hold an eyelash curler. Just make sure you’re holding them securely because you need to press hard when curling. Also widen the curler for your top lashes to fit between the rubber cushion and the metal top.’

3. Pump the curler to the root

‘Technology is everything. All lashes require different amounts of time to achieve a curl and ensure that it stays put. Some lashes can take up to 25 seconds in one curl action. Pumping the curler gently on the route is a great way to avoid any hard turns in the rain. By not concentrating the twist on one area, you avoid the L shape and create perfect, soft curls.’
